HOW IT WORKS

Train out. Ride. Train home.

Everything about a Wayside ride, from choosing a date to the train home.

THREE WAYS TO RIDE

A day, a weekend or longer.

ONE DAY

Jaunts

A full day’s ride of 20 to 25 miles, starting and finishing at a station. Out on a morning train, home in time for dinner.

TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT

Weekenders

Two days’ riding with a night at an inn in between. Your bag goes ahead, so you only carry what you need for the day.

THREE DAYS OR MORE

Journeys

Longer rides along old roads and coasts, with a different town each night. Coming in 2027.

FROM BOOKING TO RIDING

Five easy steps.

  1. 1

Choose a ride and a date

Book online and choose your own bike, a hybrid or an e-bike. You’ll get a confirmation by email straight away.

  2. 2

Fill in a short rider form

Your height so we can size your bike, an emergency contact and anything we should know about food or health. It takes two minutes.

  3. 3

    Your Information Pack arrives

About two weeks before your ride we send everything you need: the best train to catch, where to meet, the day’s route and what to bring.

  4. 4

    Hop on the train

Every ride starts at a station, most about an hour from London by train. Already nearby? Just meet us at the start. Your guide will be there, with your hire bike ready if you’ve booked one.

  5. 5

    Ride, stop and listen

Quiet lanes, coffee stops, lunch together and a story at every turn. Then the train home, or dinner and a bed at the inn.

THE PACE

Sociable, with plenty of stops

We ride at a conversational pace on quiet lanes and stop often: for coffee, for the view and for the stories. If you can ride for an hour or two at a steady pace, you’ll be fine.

Groups are up to 12 riders with a guide at the front. Nobody gets left behind, and nobody needs Lycra.

BIKES

Bring yours, or borrow ours

Bring any bike in good working order, or book a hybrid or e-bike with your place. Hire bikes come with a helmet and are waiting for you at the start.

An e-bike takes the sting out of the hills and lets everyone ride together, whatever their fitness.

Always included

  • A guide and storyteller, trained in ride leadership and first aid
  • A route on the quietest lanes, ridden and checked before you arrive
  • Coffee and snacks at our stops
  • Your hire bike and helmet, if booked
  • On Weekenders, a night at an inn with breakfast and your bag taken ahead

Not included

  • Train fares, though we’ll tell you the best train to catch
  • Lunch and dinner, though we book a table so we can eat together
  • Drinks with lunch
  • Entry to any paid sights
